It’s easy to fall into life’s predictable routine: wake up, go to work, cook dinner, and get ready for the next day. Some may doomscroll or tend to family responsibilities in between these day-to-day activities, but what if I told you there was a fairly simple way to live with more intention — not just routine?

Side quests are a way to step outside of what’s normal and find additional ways to thrive through excitement, investing in things that bring joy and new experiences, whether big or small.

Most people grow tired of daily routines and look for something “abnormal” outside of their regular schedules. This spring and summer, I encourage you to get outside and find joy in something spontaneous!

Here are eight ideas to get you started:

  1. Attend a local event you wouldn’t normally consider — check out what’s happening through Experience Jackson.
  2. Spend a Saturday morning at the Grand River Farmers Market and support a local vendor.
  3. Write a letter to your future self and reflect on where you are now.
  4. Plant something seasonal, even if it’s just herbs in a small pot.
  5. Explore a new route on the Jackson County Trails by walking or biking.
  6. Bring a journal or coloring book to a local park and unplug for an hour.
  7. Listen to a podcast or TED Talk while enjoying a drink at Jackson Coffee Company.
  8. Grab some sidewalk chalk, play music, and create something just for fun.
