Building community goes beyond having a single conversation. It means investing time,
resources, and having a genuine passion for supporting others. On July 18, Grow Jackson
hosted our first Community Resource Fair and partnered with many community organizations, bringing several forms of resources and information to Jackson residents.
Hosted alongside the Grand River Farmers Market, it was amazing to see both local vendors and service organizations within the walls of the Jackson Historic State Prison, a place that once housed thousands of incarcerated individuals but now serves as a space where the community can gather, connect, and prosper.
Today, the Historic State Prison serves as a space where community members come together
each week to support local vendors, learn about available resources, and build relationships with one another. Seeing organizations and residents gathered in this historic space reminded me that places can take on new meaning when people come together with a shared purpose.
As I walked by each table, checking in and making sure everyone had everything they needed, my heart was full. Acknowledging what this space once represented, I couldn’t help but appreciate how it now creates opportunities for connection under one roof.
While this was our first Community Resource Fair, I hope that the conversations and connections made during the day will continue for years to come. Looking ahead, Grow Jackson plans on hosting another Resource Fair this fall and I am excited to help build on the foundation that was created!
