Celebrating Earth Day: Honoring Our Planet and Taking Action

By Jacob Inosencio

Every year on April 22, people around the world come together to celebrate Earth Day—a day dedicated to appreciating the natural world and taking action to protect it. Earth Day is more than just an observance; it’s a reminder of our responsibility to care for our planet and ensure that future generations inherit a world that is healthy, thriving, and abundant.

The History of Earth Day
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, born out of growing concerns about pollution, environmental degradation, and the need for change. At the time, industrial pollution was largely unchecked, oil spills were devastating marine life, and air and water quality were suffering from a lack of environmental regulation. However, the momentum for change was building. Inspired by the student anti-war movement of the 1960s and the emerging environmental consciousness sparked by books like Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin proposed a national day to raise awareness about environmental issues. With the help of activist Denis Hayes, Earth Day became a grassroots movement, mobilizing millions of Americans to rally for cleaner air, water, and
a sustainable future.

The success of the first Earth Day helped lead to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of critical environmental laws like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. Over the years, Earth Day has grown into a global movement, with more than 1 billion people across 190 countries participating in activities to honor and protect the planet. While Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made, it also calls on us to take action—big or small—to continue making a difference. If you’re wondering how to celebrate Earth Day this year, here are three meaningful ways to get involved.

Plant a Tree
Trees are one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, improve air quality, and provide habitat for wildlife. Planting even one tree can make a difference, but when communities come together to plant hundreds or thousands, the impact is truly transformative.
If you have space in your yard, consider planting a tree that is native to your area—this ensures it will thrive in the local environment and support biodiversity. If you don’t have space, many local organizations and conservation groups host tree-planting events on Earth Day where you can volunteer.

Start a Garden
A garden is more than just a place to grow food—it’s a direct way to engage with the earth and contribute
to a healthier environment. Gardening helps reduce carbon emissions, improves soil health, and creates a source of fresh, local food. Even a small garden in your backyard or a few potted plants on a balcony can contribute to a more sustainable food system. If you’re new to gardening, Earth Day is a great time to start! Plant herbs, vegetables, or pollinator-friendly flowers to create a space that benefits both you and the ecosystem. If you don’t have space at home, consider joining or supporting a community garden—they not only provide fresh produce but also strengthen neighborhoods and promote food security.

Support a Local Farmer
One of the most impactful ways to support the planet is to support the people who care for it—local farmers. Industrial agriculture often relies on harmful pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and long-distance transportation, which contribute to pollution and climate change. By buying from local, sustainable farmers, you’re supporting a food system that is better for the environment, your health, and your community.
Visit a farmers’ market, join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, or shop at a farm stand. When you buy locally grown food, you’re reducing the carbon footprint of your meals, ensuring fresher and healthier produce, and keeping local farms thriving.

Every Action Counts

Earth Day is a time to celebrate our planet and recognize that every small action adds up. Whether you’re planting a tree, starting a garden, or supporting a local farmer, you are making a meaningful impact. The spirit of Earth Day isn’t just about what we do on April 22—it’s about the commitment to protecting and cherishing the earth every single day.
At Grow Jackson, we are proud to work toward a healthier and more sustainable food system in our community. This Earth Day, we encourage you to take a moment to appreciate nature, get your hands in the soil, and make a commitment—big or small—to caring for our planet.

Happy Earth Day!
